The foundation of the Smetana Park at the foot of the Gothard Hill was initiated by the musical ensemble Dalibor in 1900. In 1903 the first-ever monument of the composer Bedřich Smetana by Mořic Černil was placed here. In 1910 the monument of the composer Antonín Dvořák, designed by Miloslav Vávra, was added. Over time the open art gallery was enlarged by monuments of other renowned Czech personalities Petr Maixner (Václav Suchomel, 1914), Mikoláš Aleš (František Duchač Vyskočil, 1922) and the Slovak national hero Jánošík (Franta Úprka, 1919). The charming sculpture of Krakonoš (the giant lord of the Krkonoše Mountains) by Ladislav Šaloun (1908) became the symbol of Hořice. The sculpture Hussites on Guard (Václav Suchomel, 1903) commemorates the Hussite tradition. A sculpture of two children – Friends of Trees (Václav Suchomel, 1910) is placed in front of the elementary school Na Daliborce, in front of the Sokol Sport Hall there is a monument of Tyrš - the Thinker.
