Dientzenhofers Kirche Jungfrau Mariä Geburt

The Church of the Nativity of our Lady built between 1738 and 1748 designed by Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer is one of the town’s major historical monuments. Originally there used to stand a Gothic church destroyed in a fire in 1738. The church has a Latin cross ground plan. There is a tower in the north-west and in the centre there is a Gothic tower with arcade gallery and octagonal cupola. The interior of the church is in Baroque and Classicist style. In the 1990s the church went through a complex reconstruction, as well as the organ. In 1820 the Bedřich Smatana’s parents were married here. In the premises of the deanery there is a valuable collection of baroque sacral sculptures attributed to the students of M.B.Braun, a famous sculptor, who came here in the mid-18th century form the nearby village of Kuks (Christ in the Garden of Gatsemany, Virgin Mary with Baby Jesus, and St. Jan Nepomucký).
